Auction house Sotheby's was set to auction yesterday some papers from Martin Luther King, Jr that were given to former civil rights leader, Harry Belafonte. Belafonte's initial intent was the sell the papers because "I am at the end of my life — I will be 82 shortly — and there are a lot of causes I believe in for which resources are not available, and there is a need to redistribute those resources." But the King family was in such an uproar over how Belafonte acquired the papers; accusing him of "wrongly acquiring" them that Belafonte removed the papers from the auction table. According to Belafonte the papers were passed on to him from King's wife. There was a pre-sale estimate of $750,000 to 1.3 million for the papers.
